MORRISTOWN BAPTIST TABERNACLE

STATEMENT OF FAITH

1.  We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Bible, “as it is in truth, the Word of God...” (I Thessalonians 2:13). We believe in verbal, plenary inspiration in the original writings, and God's preservation of His pure words to every generation (II Timothy 3:16, Psalms 12:6-8).

The Masoretic Text of the Old Testament and the Received Text of the New Testament (Textus Receptus) are those texts of the original languages we accept and use; the Authorized Version of the Bible is the only English version we accept and use. The Bible is our sole authority for faith and practice.  (II Tim. 3:16, 17; II Peter 1:19-21; Acts 1:16; Ps. 119:160; Luke 24:25-27; Prov. 30:5,6; Romans 3:4; Isaiah 8:20)

2.  We believe in one God, eternally existing in three person:  Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  ( Ex. 20:2,3; Gen. 17:1;  I Cor. 8:6; Eph. 4:6;  Ps. 147:5;  Jer. 10:10;  Rev.4:11;  Romans 11:33)

3.  We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, and born of Mary, a virgin, and is true God and true man.  (Is. 7:14;  Matt. 1:18-25; Luke 1:35;  Mark 1:1;  Gal. 4:4;  I Jn. 5:20;  I Cor. 15:47;  I Tim. 3:16;  Ps. 2:7)

4.  We believe that man was created in the image of God, that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God:  and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature, and , in the case of those who reach the age of moral responsibility, are sinners in thought, word and deed.  (Gen. 3:1-6;  Ezek. 18:19-20; Rom. 5:12,19;  Rom. 3:10-19;  Rom. 1:20, 28, 32;  Gal. 3:22;  Eph. 2:1-3)

5.  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world, according to the Scriptures, as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood.  (Acts 13:39;  Isa. 53:11;  Zech. 13:1;  Rom. 4:1-8;  Rom. 5: 1, 9;  Rom. 8:1;  Gal. 3:11;  Titus 3:5-7;   Heb. 10:38)

6.  We believe in the "Eternal Security" of the believer, that it is impossible for one born into the family of God ever to be lost.  (John 8:31,32;  Col. 1:21,23;  I John 2:19;  Matt. 13:19-21;  Rom. 8:23,35-39;  John 10:28,29;  Matt. 6:30;  Heb. 1:4;  Phil. 1:6)

7.  We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into heaven, and in His present life there as High Priest and Advocate.  (Matt. 28:6,7;  Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9;  Rev. 3:21;  Heb. 8:1,6; Heb 12:2)

8.  We believe in "that blessed hope" - the personal, pretribulational and imminent return of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, when the Church will be gathered together unto Him.  (Acts 1:11; John 14:3; I Thess. 4:16,17;  Matt. 24:27, 42;  Matt. 25:13;  James 5:8;  I Cor. 15:51,52)

9.  We believe in the literal fulfillment of the prophecies and promises of the Scriptures which foretell and assure the future regeneration and restoration of Israel as a nation.  (Ezek. 36:24-28;  Ezek. 11:16-20;  Jer. 32:37-41;  Zech. 12:10;  Rev. 1:7;  Rom. 11:26;  Amos 9:5;  Ezek. 34:28)

10.  We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become the Children of God.  (Luke 5:27;  John 1:12,13;  John 3:3-8;  Acts 2:41;  II Cor. 5:17;  Gal. 5:22;  Eph. 2:1;  Eph. 5:9;  II Peter 1:4)

11.  We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting punishment of the lost.  (Rev. 3:21;  John 14:3;   I Cor. 15:35-44;  Rev. 20:1-15;  Rev. 22:1-7)

12.  We believe that the Scriptual ordinances of the church are Baptism and the Lord's Supper, that Baptism, by immersion, should be administered to believers only as a symbol of their belief in the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and as a testimony to the world of that belief and of their death, burial and resurrection with Him, and that the Lord's Supper should be partaken of by believers only to show forth His death, till He comes.  (Matt. 3:6, 16;  Matt. 28:19,20;  John 3:23;   Acts 2:41,42;   Acts 8:36-39;  Rom. 6:3-5;      I Cor. 11:23-28;   Col. 2:12)
